1050 Calories burned. Take that Crumbs.
Yum. I’ve been in NYC for just over a year now – and I have to say the number one thing that I’m grateful for is the food. Not just breakfast at the greasy spoon diners, not just crunchy/chewy paninis and taco trucks, street-meat, international cuisines, etc…. NO – not just that food… but the glorious obsession NY has with cupcakes. Wait, NY obsesses over a lot of things – but seriously, this cupcake thing has me. They’re everywhere. The famous cupcake places are the big names, Crumbs, Magnolia, etc. But little competitors have started to pop-up everywhere too. (Sweet Revenge in the West Village, I know you’re there… I’ll be there someday to try you!)
The worst part is this – We’ve lived in our apartment since April of last year – and we noticed this one little cafe place right around the corner, and we just kept passing by. (Too many choices in our ‘hood). It was probably 6 months in the area before we just got lazy and stumbled in. To our surprise, we were met with a case full of CRUMBS cupcakes. WHAT!?!?! We live in Queens. This isn’t CRUMBS… how is this possible? Yes. I was both elated with joy – and angry reflecting on the numerous rainy weekends I’d make my darling other-half schlepp on the trains with me so that we could indulge in heavenly delights loaded with TOO much frosting. (I really do have a good man, because he doesn’t even like sweets and he’d always join on these adventures). So, back to our neighborhood cafe… Yep, this place offers a smaller selection of them – but they’re the same CRUMBy temptations. The Elvis, The Arty Lange, Banana & Strawberry, Devil Dog, Carrot Cake, Oatmeal Cookie…
I’ve been pretty good about passing by and not being as tempted as I’d initially feared… However, I have to admit – when I’m occasionally required to work from my company’s other location outside of Times Square, I’m very happy to skidaddle right into Crumbs. I snapped this shot awhile ago – (when I was being VERY strong and only got coffee)!
I’m fascinated by the NYC obsession with these little calorie/fat laden-cakes. I saw somewhere what the the calorie count was and I was not surprised, but I seem to continue to “forget” that everytime I see them sitting in the case smiling back at me.
I was on my elliptical this morning thinking, I should work off ONE cupcake, just in case I want to have one this weekend. (How pathetic!?!?!) Rest assured, I WILL have one.
To be fair, Crumbs isn’t necessarily my favorite cupcake baker, I’m just well-aware of where they are.
The others are scattered throughout the city – and I’ve yet to really plan a day out to find them all. But I will. I understand the latest is the cupcake truck that’s touring the city and the 5-boroughs. I will wait in line if it comes around here. On that note. Time for breakfast. mmmmmmmm… Cheerios just don’t sound as appealing.

But 1 cupcake = 6 miles!!!
I know. As I’ve gotten older – I almost regret looking at cupcakes – because I BUY the weight. No more of the good ol’ “renting” days where I could indulge as often as I wanted and it just wouldn’t STICK.
